Just learned about this tonight.
Thank goodness Daesh or other straight-up evil people aren’t as good at making bombs as this (for the most part). I gotta give the guy who masterminded the plan credit - he’s a master bomb maker.

Most evil people don’t want you to find the bomb, nor do they actually want anything obtainable in this universe, so they don’t have to be very clever with it. When you’re making a threat that you’ll get what you want or boooom! you have to be a little more creative.

There’s no need for such sophistication and plenty of evil people HAVE done something like this. All they need is a rented truck and plenty of fertilizer (Timothy McVeigh, Okc bombing), a large amount of urea nitrate and a truck (WTC bombing), or a good sized plane (WTC, again). Even old ordnance and a trip wire or cell phone will suffice (IEDs).

So I remember this. Fortunately no one got hurt as they evacuated that end of South Tahoe when they tried to disable the bomb. Unfortunately the casino was trashed when that failed. They blew it up on my 20th Birthday.
It fostered plenty of good capitalist humor at the time.

I can’t run my business worth a damn, but it can’t be my fault. I will blame...unions? Regulations? Taxes? Nah, I will blame a casino. And not only that, I will build a bomb to extort money from them so I can keep my business going, because it ain’t my fault.
I’m not sure this is much different than today. This guy just lived in a time where gathering bomb-making materials (was that even a phrase back then?) did not set off the alarms it does today. But the personality type is alive and well.
